Five robots, with the share of pet hair each one really picked up, for carpet, hardwood, a cluttered floor, or a home that doesn't want a mop.

A shedding cat leaves the same soft gray line along every baseboard, and it's back two days after you vacuum. The eufy Omni E25 is what I'd put on that job, at about $600. Tech Gear Lab spread pet hair on carpet for 23 robots and measured what each one took up. The E25 got 86 percent of it, and very little wrapped around its brush.

It finds its way around a mess better than it finds its way around a room, though. It misses corners, it isn't strong on hard floors, and it can chew the edge of a thin rug. For mostly hardwood or a lot of throw rugs, one of the others below will suit you better.

The robot vacuum cleaners for pet hair, ranked

Top pick
Best overall

1. eufy Omni E25

eufy Omni E25

It picked up more hair than all but one of the 23 robots in the lab's run, and it steered around the fake pet mess.

Buy it if
You've got a heavy shedder, mostly carpet, and a pet who sometimes has accidents.
Skip it if
Your floors are mostly thin rugs, or your chairs sit close together. It's bad at tight spots under chairs.

Most hair goes straight to the bin rather than around the roller. A little collects at the sweeper arms and where the brush connects, and it's easy to pull off. In the lab's run with a fake pet accident, it went around the mess, which matters more in a home with a puppy or an old dog than any suction figure on the box.

The roller mop rinses itself as it goes, and the dock washes and dries it. It's fine for a fresh spill. It couldn't lift a dried coffee stain, so keep your own mop for that.

Pick the time it empties

The dock measured 80.5 decibels while emptying, and the lab called it a roar. I'd schedule the run for when you're out. The eufy bag holds about 75 days of dust by the maker's count.

Where it falls short
  • It skips some edges and corners, and it scored just 5.6 out of 10 on hard floors.
  • At 4.3 inches, it's the tallest robot on this page and won't clear many low couches.
Best for carpet

2. Ecovacs Deebot N20 Pro Plus

Ecovacs Deebot N20 Pro Plus

The N20 Pro earned the top carpet score of 23 robots, and this version adds a bagless station to empty it.

Buy it if
Your home is mostly carpet, and you can pick up the floor before each run.
Skip it if
You've got a puppy, or an old dog who has accidents. It doesn't reliably steer around them.

It got 74 percent of the hair and the best carpet score of the 23, 9 out of 10, for a good deal less money than the E25. What separates the two is the driving: this one has trouble with socks and small toys, and the lab's fake accident didn't stop it.

Where it falls short
  • Long hair can tangle the roller badly enough to take several minutes to clear.
  • On hard floors it picked up 62 percent of the debris, and it left fine grit behind.
Read more about the N20 Pro Plus

Those numbers come from the plain N20 Pro, which has no station and a bin that fills quickly with hair. The button goes to the Pro Plus, which adds a bagless station that Ecovacs says holds 45 days of dust, with no bags to buy.

Best for a cluttered floor

3. Dreame L50 Ultra

Dreame L50 Ultra

It had the best navigation score of the 23, with a pet mode that takes extra care around messes.

Buy it if
The floor is never quite clear: cat toys, phone cords, a dog bed that moves around.
Skip it if
Fur is the only problem you're trying to solve. The E25 picks up more of it for less money.

You're paying for a robot that doesn't get stuck. It scored 9.3 out of 10 for finding its way and avoiding things, the highest of the 23, and it avoided cords, furniture and pet accidents. Dreame adds legs that lift it up to 2.36 inches over door tracks and rug edges, and a choice of carpet modes that includes vacuuming twice and a suction boost, which is what I'd try on thick carpet.

Where it falls short
  • At 64.9 decibels while cleaning, it runs louder than the E25 or the N20 Pro.
  • A small amount of hair still wraps the main brush, and some clumps inside the robot over repeated passes.
Read more about the L50

Surface fur is no trouble for it, but a dense clump may need a second pass. Sometimes it takes a heap of debris for an obstacle and drives around it.

Best for hardwood floors

4. Roborock Qrevo CurvX

Roborock Qrevo CurvX

It cleared 96 percent of the debris on hardwood, and at 3.14 inches it goes where taller robots can't.

Buy it if
Your floors are mostly hardwood and your couch sits low.
Skip it if
You're dealing with a heavy shedder on carpet. It leaves balls of fur behind.

On hardwood it cleared 96 percent of the debris, and it took a coffee stain up in two passes. I rank it above the Shark despite the lower hair figure for that reason. Bare floor doesn't hold on to fur the way carpet does, and the 52 percent is a carpet number.

Where it falls short
  • It's expensive for a robot that leaves fur on carpet.
  • A little hair wraps around the ends of the roller, though the roller comes out easily.
Read more about the CurvX

Roborock gives it a height of 3.14 inches, the lowest here, so it goes under sofas and cabinets where hair collects and you never look. It avoided cords and socks, and when it stops for an obstacle, you may have to clear the block in the app before it will run there again.

Best without a mop

5. Shark AV2501AE AI Ultra

Shark AV2501AE AI Ultra

No water tank and no pads to wash, and a bagless base that Shark says holds 60 days of dirt.

Buy it if
You want a robot that vacuums and nothing else, with no bags to buy.
Skip it if
The floor is often cluttered. Its navigation scored 4.4 out of 10.

A mop means a water tank to fill and pads to wash, and plenty of homes with carpet will never use one. This robot leaves all of that out. It picked up about two-thirds of the hair, and its base has no bag, only a bin Shark says holds 60 days of dirt behind a HEPA filter.

Where it falls short
  • The lab found it short on features next to the other robots it scored.
Read more about the Shark

I'd keep expectations modest: the lab called its navigation clunky, and it scored 4.4 out of 10 on hard floors.

Best robot vacuum and mop for pet hair

Four of these five mop. For hair first and mopping second, stay with the E25. For a mop that does more of the work, the CurvX has the better record on stains. Check the carpet settings on any of them, so a wet pad doesn't cross a rug; the L50 can leave its pads at the dock for a dry run over carpet.

Best robot vacuum for pet hair on hardwood floors

The CurvX, and the gap is wide. The N20 Pro scored 5.1 out of 10 on hard floors and the E25 5.6, against 9.3 for the CurvX. Fine grit and edges are what hard floors show up, and that's where the N20 falls behind.

Best robot vacuum for pet hair without a mop

The Shark. A mopping robot with its pads left off still costs you the dock that washes them, and the Shark has no such dock to pay for.

Best robot vacuum for pet hair and carpet

The N20 Pro Plus, by the numbers, with the E25 if accidents are part of your week. Neither score tells you much about very deep pile, so for thick carpet and pet hair I'd go with the L50 and its carpet modes. A robot won't reach the couch either: for fur on the upholstery, a hand tool like the ChomChom Roller does what no floor robot can.

What to look for in a robot vacuum for pet hair

Hair picked up, not suction

Pascal figures on the box don't predict much. The Q7 M5+ advertises 10,000 and got 26 percent of the hair; the N20 Pro advertises 8,000 and got 74.

What it does around a mess

If an animal in your home has accidents, this comes before everything else. A robot that drives through one spreads it across the room.

Height against your furniture

Measure under the couch before you buy. Hair settles there, and these robots run from 3.14 to 4.3 inches tall.

What it costs to keep

Bagged docks need new bags, and the N20 Pro Plus and the Shark don't use any. Brushes and filters wear out on all of them.

Narwal Freo X Ultra

It had the best hair figure of all, about 90 percent. It also ran straight over the fake accident, and the listing on Amazon is a renewed unit rather than a new one.

Roborock Q7 M5+

It mops capably, but it took up 26 percent of the hair, and longer fur tangles the roller. With a shedding pet, I'd spend more.

Mova P10 Pro Ultra

It scored well on carpet debris and hardwood, but pet hair is the job here: 40 percent of the hair, a roller that sometimes needs scissors, and a habit of driving through pet messes.

Also compared: Roborock Qrevo S5V, Dreame D10 Plus Gen 2, Ecovacs Deebot X9 Pro Omni, iRobot Roomba Combo 10 Max and iRobot Roomba QO120.

Common questions

Will a robot vacuum run over dog poop or cat accidents?

Some will. The E25 and the L50 went around the mess in the lab's run, while the N20 Pro, the Narwal and the Mova did not. Even a good one can miss, so if you've got a puppy in training, run it after you've checked the floor.

Do robot vacuums scare cats?

Plenty of cats leave the room for the first few runs, and the dock's emptying cycle is louder than the cleaning. Start it when your cat has a high spot to watch from and a way out, and don't let it corner her.

Can a robot vacuum pick up cat litter?

On a hard floor, mostly. Fine grit is what these robots leave behind on carpet, and clumping litter is close to that. A mat by the box catches more, and the low-tracking litter section covers the rest. Don't send a mopping robot through it: wet clumping litter sticks.

How often should you run a robot vacuum with pets?

Daily during shedding season, if the noise doesn't bother anyone. Hair builds up in a day, and a robot does better on a little fresh fur than on a dense clump, which often takes a second pass.

The verdict

Before the first run

If your pet has accidents even a few times a year, get the E25 rather than saving money on a robot that drives through them. Pick up the thin rugs and the bath mat before its first run, because those edges are what it chews.
