By Maggie CallahanUpdated · 13 boxes compared

Pine pellets fall apart on purpose. Wet, they swell and crumble to sawdust, and the trick to using them is getting that sawdust out while the clean pellets stay. The So Phresh Lift-to-Sift X-Large does it with a slotted tray: lift it, give it a shake, and the sawdust drops into the pan below. At 22.4 inches long it has room for most grown cats, and it's about $40.

Pellets are a choice your cat has to agree with. If she walks out of a box of them, no sifting box will change her mind, and a fine clumping litter in a plain box will suit her better.

1. So Phresh Lift-to-Sift Litter Pan, X-Large

So Phresh Lift-to-Sift Litter Pan, X-Large

A slotted tray lifts out of the pan and leaves the sawdust behind, in a box 22.4 inches long with a high back.

Buy it if
You use pine or another pellet that crumbles, and your cat is of ordinary size.
Skip it if
Your cat is over 15 inches from nose to tail base. At 22.4 inches, she'll want more room; the SiftEase lets you keep a longer box.

It's Petco's own brand, in three pieces: a pan, a white tray full of slots that sits in it, and a rim with a tall back that clips over both. The back stands 10.6 inches, which keeps kicked pellets on your side of the wall. Petco sells it for most litters and for homes with more than one cat.

What puts it first is the length. Going by the litter box size table, 22.4 inches suits a cat about 15 inches from nose to tail base. The Arm & Hammer, the classic three-piece sifting box, is 18.9 inches, and that's a box for a small cat. The So Phresh costs a little more, and a grown cat uses the extra inches and the tall back every day. Make sure it says X-Large, the size the button goes to: the one Petco calls Large is only 19.7 inches.

Before it goes in a closet

With the rim on it's 10.6 inches tall and nearly 17 wide, so a low shelf or a narrow cupboard is out.

Where it falls short
  • It's three plastic pieces to wash on cleaning day, where a plain pan is one.
Best compact

2. Arm & Hammer Sifting Litter Box

Arm & Hammer Sifting Litter Box

Two pans and a sifting tray that stack, made in the US, for a spot too small for a bigger box.

Buy it if
Your cat is small, or you want a second pellet box for another floor.
Skip it if
Your cat is a grown cat of ordinary size or bigger. At 18.9 inches, she'll end up perched on the rim.

This is the classic three-piece sifting box, and the cheapest one that works: two plain pans and a slotted tray that nest together. Its Amazon listing names pine, crystals, pellets and clumping litter, and Petmate, who makes it, builds it in the US with Microban in the plastic.

Where it falls short
  • The walls are under 8 inches, low for a cat who digs with gusto.
  • There's one size, and it's on the small side.
Read more about the Arm & Hammer

With pine, the tray holds the pellets and a shake sends the sawdust through. With clumping litter it runs the other way: you pour the litter through the tray into the spare pan, and the clumps stay behind to throw out. The whole set weighs 3 pounds, so it's easy to lift and tip.

Best pad system

3. Tidy Cats Breeze Litter Box System

Tidy Cats Breeze Litter Box System

Urine runs through hard pellets to a pad in a drawer, so there's nothing to sift, only a pad to swap each week.

Buy it if
You like pellets but not sawdust, and you'd rather swap a pad once a week than sift.
Skip it if
Your cat is fussy about texture. These pellets are about as far from fine clay as litter gets.

The Breeze works differently. Its pellets are zeolite, a mineral, and they don't crumble: the urine runs between them, through a grate, and into a pad in a drawer underneath. You lift out the poop, slide out the drawer, and change the pad. Purina rates a pad for a week with one cat and a bag of pellets for a month.

Where it falls short
  • You buy pads as well as pellets, every month, and only Breeze pellets are made for it.
  • Most cats prefer small, clumping grains, per the Merck Veterinary Manual, and these are the opposite.
Read more about the Breeze

That's where the cost comes in: for one cat, about $25 a month in pads and pellets, and more with two cats. Purina also sells an XL with higher walls and more room for bigger cats, at a higher price; the button here goes to the standard size.

Best for a high pee-er

4. Suzzipaws XL Stainless Steel Sifting Litter Box

Suzzipaws XL Stainless Steel Sifting Litter Box

Two steel pans under a wall that clips on 12 inches high, for a cat who stands up to pee.

Buy it if
Your cat stands up to pee and the wall behind the box gets the worst of it.
Skip it if
Your cat is small. This is a lot of box, and a lot of money, for a cat the Arm & Hammer fits.

For a cat who aims high, the wall is what you're buying. It clips onto the steel pans and stands 12 inches tall, and Suzzipaws overlaps it at the seams so urine runs back into the box. Inside, a steel tray with oval holes sits over a second pan lined with a pad, so pellets stay on top and the wet sawdust and urine go below. It comes with a scoop, ten pads and a roll of bags.

Where it falls short
  • The bottom pan takes a pee pad, so there's a refill to buy, as with the Breeze.
  • It costs well over the So Phresh for about the same length: you're paying for the steel and the 12-inch wall.
Read more about the Suzzipaws

Its Amazon listing, the one the button goes to, gives the XL 22.6 by 14.5 inches, about the length of the So Phresh; Suzzipaws' own store lists other measurements by size, so check the listing before you order. It's sold for pine, zeolite and crystal pellets, and the steel pans go in the tub for a hard scrub, a weekly job with a cat who pees high.

Best for the box you own

5. SiftEase Cat Litter Sifter with Bin

SiftEase Cat Litter Sifter with Bin

A sifter and a fabric bin you pour the whole box through, so a long box can stay where it is.

Buy it if
Your cat needs a box longer than any sifting box sold, or you already have a box she likes.
Skip it if
You'd rather not lift a full litter box. You pour the whole thing in at once.

Most sifting boxes stop around 23 inches, short of what the biggest cats need, so this goes the other way: keep a long box, like the 30-inch IRIS XX-Large, and sift it on the side. You pour the box into the sifter, which sits in a fabric bin, and the clean litter goes back. The maker sells it for covered, open and top-entry boxes, extra-large ones included.

Where it falls short
  • A full box of litter is heavy to pour, and the bin needs a spot of its own between uses.
  • With pine it's a workaround, not what SiftEase builds it for; the trays above do that job more easily.
Read more about the SiftEase

SiftEase makes it for clumping litter that fits through a standard scoop, and the clumps stay on top. Pine is a side use: you flip the process, so the sawdust falls into the bin and the clean pellets stay in the sifter, which is slower than shaking a tray. It's made in the US, with a plastic sifter and a coated polyester bin you wipe down.

How to use pine pellets in a sifting box

Fill the sifting tray with pellets about an inch to an inch and a half deep, the depth Lady N Pet, which sells pine litter, suggests. Every day, lift out the poop and shake the tray so the sawdust drops into the pan below, then top up with a handful of fresh pellets. Once a week, empty everything, wash the pans and start again: that's International Cat Care's rule for any litter that doesn't clump.

Moving a cat over from clay goes better with a second box beside the old one, filled with pellets, before the old box goes. If she still goes somewhere else after a week of the two boxes side by side, the litter box problems page has the next step for each one.

Best sifting litter box for clumping litter

The So Phresh for a grown cat, the Arm & Hammer for a small one: both work with clumping litter as well as pine. You pour the litter through the tray instead of shaking pellets on it, and the clumps stay behind. The SiftEase does the same for a box you already own, and clumping litter is what it's made for. It isn't always easier than a scoop, though, and if what you want is to stop scooping clumps altogether, the best self-cleaning litter boxes are the ones that do it.

What to look for in a sifting litter box

Long enough for your cat

Most sifting boxes are short. Check the length against your cat before the price.

Slots for your litter

Sold for pellets or pine, not only for clumping clay. Fine sawdust falls through; big clean pellets shouldn't.

What it costs each month

A pad in a drawer or a pan is a refill you buy forever. A plain pine box costs only the pellets.

Walls that match your cat

Tall for a cat who kicks or pees high, lower for one who's older or stiff.

Three I'd pass over for pellets

Van Ness Large Sifting Cat Pan with Frame (CP5)

A good framed box for clumping litter, but Van Ness itself says it's not ideal for pellets. For pine, the So Phresh is longer and made for it.

Catit SmartSift

You pull a handle and the clumps drop into a drawer, which is clever, but it's made for clumping litter, it has a swinging door on the hood, and it costs more than any box in the list.

Sorstrem Pull-Out Sifting Litter Box (M)

The bottom tray pulls out like a drawer, so the sifting pan never moves. The Medium is only 17.5 inches long, though, and the XXL, at 23.5, costs far more than the Suzzipaws for about the same length.

Kitty Sift Disposable Litter Box, Large (6-pack) is ranked in the best litter boxes for kittens.

Common questions

Do cats hate pellet litter?

Some do. Most cats prefer small, clumping grains, according to the Merck Veterinary Manual, and big pellets feel nothing like that under the paw. Plenty of cats take to pine anyway, given a pellet box next to their old one for a while.

Are pellets good for litter?

For low dust and less tracking, yes: pellets are too big to cling to paws. Pine crumbles as it soaks up urine, so it wants a sifting box; zeolite pellets like the Breeze's stay whole and let the urine through to a pad underneath.

How much pine pellets for cat litter?

An inch to an inch and a half in the sifting tray, topped up a little each day as the sawdust goes.

Can you use clumping litter in a sifting box?

Yes. Pour the litter through the slotted tray into the spare pan, and the clumps stay on the tray to throw out. The So Phresh and the Arm & Hammer both work this way.

Do you need a sifting litter box for pine pellets?

Not strictly, but it makes the job easy. In a plain box, the sawdust collects under the clean pellets and you end up scooping both; with a sifting tray, one shake separates them.

The verdict

Before your cat steps in

Set up the So Phresh before your cat sees it: pour in the pellets, then give the tray a shake over the pan. A new bag can hold broken pellets and dust, a cheap one especially, and you want those through the slots now, not under her paws on the first visit.
