Live with a dog long enough and the hair gets on everything, the couch first. The ChomChom Roller takes it off for about $25, with no batteries and no sticky sheets to keep buying. A hair roller sounds like a chore in a box, I know, but dog people tend to be happy to get one, because it's the thing they complain about most.

It only works on fabric, so take a look at the sofa before you buy. If it's leather, go with the Mighty Paw pouch.

Best gifts for dog lovers, by who's opening it

Think about the part of dog life that wears on them most. The person who mops after every walk gets the MudBuster, and the one out twice a day with a pocket full of crumbs gets the Mighty Paw pouch. Someone who's forever guessing what their shelter dog is can have the answer from the Embark kit. A coworker you like, but not $100 worth, gets the calendar. And if you're shopping for the dog himself, that's a different list: the best gifts for dogs.

The gifts for dog owners, ranked

Top pick
Best overall

1. ChomChom Roller

ChomChom Roller

A reusable roller that sweeps dog hair off upholstery into a chamber you empty, with no sticky sheets to buy.

Buy it if
They have a shedding dog and a fabric couch, car seats or a low rug.
Skip it if
Their furniture is leather. It works on fabric only, and it does nothing for hard floors either.

You push it back and forth over the cushion, the hair ends up in a chamber in the body, and one button opens it over the trash. There's no adhesive and nothing to refill, which is why I'd put it above any present that gets used for a week and forgotten.

It does its best work in short sessions: a couple of cushions, the back seat, the dog's favorite corner. Rolling a whole sofa by hand is a lot to ask, so think of it as a touch-up tool.

Where it won't help

Shaggy rugs and plush bath mats keep most of their hair down in the pile, and clothes bunch up under it. For a coat on the way out the door, ChomChom sells a smaller roller.

Where it falls short
  • It's work: you roll it by hand, and a big sofa takes a while.
  • Hard floors and leather get nothing out of it.
Best for muddy walks

2. Dexas MudBuster, Large

Dexas MudBuster, Large

A cup of soft silicone bristles: add water, put the paw in, twist, dry.

Buy it if
Their dog comes home with four muddy feet and the front hall has a light floor.
Skip it if
The dog won't let anyone touch his feet. That's a training project, and this won't solve it for them.

It costs less than the ChomChom and it's easier to explain at the door: a little water, one paw in the cup, a twist, a towel. The bristles are an inch of soft silicone, and it lives by the entry or in the car. It's a small present, and a useful one if November is wet where they live.

Where it falls short
  • The water gets dirty fast. Some owners change it halfway through the four paws.
  • It needs a rinse after every muddy walk, or it goes in the dishwasher about weekly.

Dexas makes three sizes, and this link is the Large, for paws 2.5 to 3.5 inches wide. The Medium covers 1.5 to 2.5 inches, so if you've seen smaller feet on this dog, switch sizes on Amazon before you check out.

Best for daily walkers

3. Mighty Paw Treat Pouch

Mighty Paw Treat Pouch

Treats, keys and poop bags in one small bag with a magnetic top, worn at the waist or across the body.

Buy it if
They're training a puppy, or they walk a dog twice a day with their pockets full of kibble.
Skip it if
They carry a big phone and hate taking it out of a pocket. A few owners found the phone pocket snug.

The whole bag is 7 inches by 5, with four compartments and room for 2 cups of treats, and Mighty Paw includes a built-in holder with a roll of poop bags. The strap adjusts from 30 to 52 inches, so it goes across the body, over a shoulder or around the waist, and there's a clip if they'd rather hang it on a belt. Your friend's coat pockets will smell less like liver.

Where it falls short
  • The magnets are strong, so it can take a tug to open.
  • They also snap shut loudly, and a dog can learn what that sound means.
Best big present

4. Embark Breed ID Dog DNA Test

Embark Breed ID Dog DNA Test

A cheek swab that screens for over 400 breeds and traces the mix back to the great-grandparents.

Buy it if
The dog is a rescue or a mix, and they've been guessing out loud for years.
Skip it if
The dog is a purebred with papers. They already know the answer, and this kit won't tell them about health.

This is the present for a big birthday or a very close friend. It's by far the biggest spend on this list, and they'll be repeating the results at the dog park. You swab the cheek, register online and mail it back with the prepaid label; Embark's Amazon listing says results generally come in 2 to 4 weeks. It also has a relative finder, so they may end up looking at a photo of the dog's cousin.

Where it falls short
  • It's the priciest thing on this page by far.
  • A behavior report and training plan are extra, as an upgrade inside the app.
Read more about the Embark kit

On Christmas morning all they'll open is the kit, so tuck in a note that says the answer takes a few weeks.

Breed only, or health too

This is the Breed ID kit. The Breed & Health version costs more, at about $139, and adds screening for genetic risks. For a young dog I'd pay the extra, since a surprise on the health report is best discussed with a vet early. For an older rescue, the breed answer alone makes the better present.

Best custom gift

5. Haus and Hues Custom Pet Portrait, Unframed

Haus and Hues Custom Pet Portrait, Unframed

Their dog's photo, printed in a watercolor style on paper, ready for a frame.

Buy it if
You can get hold of a sharp, well-lit photo of the dog, which may mean a little spying on their Instagram.
Skip it if
You need it to be returnable. Haus and Hues treats its custom prints as final, except for damage or a design error.

You upload the photo and it comes back as a watercolor-style print. It's a print from your picture and not a painting by hand, and at about $15 you'd be right to expect that. It's also a gentle thing to give someone who has lost a dog, though only if you know they're ready to look at it.

Where it falls short
  • The result is only as good as the photo you send.
  • Custom work needs lead time, so order well before the day.

Budget for the frame

It ships unframed, on purpose, so a frame is on you. Haus and Hues sells a framed version too, for more.

Best for the desk

6. Thoughts of Dog 2027 Day-to-Day Calendar

Thoughts of Dog 2027 Day-to-Day Calendar

A page a day of what a very sincere dog is thinking about, from the creator of WeRateDogs.

Buy it if
You want something small and funny for a coworker, a neighbor or a stocking.
Skip it if
They've already got a desk full of novelty items, or they work entirely from their phone.

Matt Nelson, who created WeRateDogs, writes this one in the voice of a dog who thinks about snacks and about how much he loves his human. It's a page a day, so it's on their desk every morning of 2027. This is the one item here you can buy for someone whose dog you've never met.

Where it falls short
  • The tone is very sweet. A dry friend might prefer the WeRateDogs calendar, from the same writer.
Best dog dad gift

7. Hatphile Dog Dad Hat

Hatphile Dog Dad Hat

A soft, washed cotton cap with DOG DAD stitched on the front and nothing else going on.

Buy it if
He wears a cap on walks anyway, and the dog is his favorite topic.
Skip it if
He'd feel silly in a slogan. Then get him the pouch.

There are dozens of dog dad caps on Amazon, and most try too hard, with flags, leather patches or a paw print the size of a coaster. This one is prewashed cotton twill with an unstructured crown, "DOG DAD" in plain stitching, and an adjustable strap, so you don't need to know his size. It also comes in navy, khaki and brown, if black isn't his color.

Where it falls short
  • A black cap and a golden retriever will meet, and you know who wins. Pick khaki for a pale dog.
Best for a reader

8. Inside of a Dog, by Alexandra Horowitz

Inside of a Dog, by Alexandra Horowitz

A dog cognition researcher on what a walk is like from the dog's end of the leash.

Buy it if
They read, and they've just brought home a first dog.
Skip it if
They want training steps. This explains how a dog sees and smells the world, not how to stop him jumping.

Alexandra Horowitz runs the Dog Cognition Lab at Barnard College, and the book was a No. 1 New York Times best seller. She follows what dogs notice on an ordinary day, and afterward most readers look at a slow, sniffing walk differently. It's the cheapest thing on this list, and it's a nice extra next to a bigger present.

Where it falls short
  • It's a book of ideas, with slow patches for anyone who just wants tips.

Best custom gifts for pet lovers

The Haus and Hues portrait is the easy one, because all it asks of you is a photo. If you want something personal for the dog's side of things, the embroidered collar in our guide to gifts for dogs carries his name and their phone number. Both are made to order, so buy these first if you're shopping in December.

The best dog dad gifts

Start with the Hatphile hat for the man who likes to be identified on sight. A dad who does the morning walk will get more out of the Mighty Paw pouch, because it clears out his jacket pockets. And for the one who's forever saying "there's definitely some shepherd in her," hand him the Embark kit and let him find out.

What to look for in a present for a dog person

What to look for in a gift for a dog owner

Which dog they have

Paw width, coat color and how much hair he drops all change the right answer. A quick look at the dog first saves a return.

Something they use, not display

Most dog owners already own the mug. Choose the thing that makes a daily chore smaller.

How well you know them

A DNA kit is for family and close friends. For an office gift, stay near the price of the calendar.

Furbo 360° Dog Camera

The version at the gift price needs a subscription at setup, and that's an ongoing bill you'd be handing someone along with the bow. Unless they've asked for a camera, I'd leave it.

Scotch-Brite Pet Hair Roller

A fine thing to keep by the door, but a roll of 95 sticky sheets runs out, and then it's a handle. As a present, it says less than the reusable one.

Also compared: Wisdom Panel Essential, Ruffwear Treat Trader, ChomChom Mini, Our Name is Mud Dog Mom mug and Dandylion paw cleaner.

Common questions

What are the best gifts for pet owners?

For anyone with a shedding dog or cat, the ChomChom Roller, since it works on both. After that, it comes down to their routine: something for the walk, something for the mud, or a portrait of the animal.

What do you get a dog lover who has everything?

A DNA kit if the dog is a mix, because it's something they can't already own. For a purebred, get the custom portrait, as long as you can find a good photo.

What's a good cheap gift for a dog owner?

Inside of a Dog or the Thoughts of Dog calendar. Neither needs you to know the dog's size, and both fit in a stocking.

Is a gift for the dog or the owner better?

If you're close to them, buy for the owner, because the owner is the one who opens it. The dog is delighted by the box either way. For a present he'll actually play with, go to the gifts for dogs guide.

The verdict

Before you order

Get the ChomChom, and find out what the couch is made of first. Ask someone in the family if you can't remember. If it's leather, get the Mighty Paw pouch instead.
